Bach und Mendelssohn
Mendelssohn Meets Bach with Erich Höbarth
Baroque Masterpieces and Romantic Sound Richness at Kufstein Fortress
On Saturday, November 15, 2025, the cultural program of the city of Kufstein will present a special concert evening in the Kaiserturm of Kufstein Fortress: Under the direction of Erich Höbarth, the orchestra of the Tyrolean State Conservatory will perform works by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Johann Bernhard Bach.
The evening is dedicated primarily to Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, the "Mozart of his time." Mendelssohn deeply revered Johann Sebastian Bach, was inspired by his work, and brought it back to life in the 19th century. Two of his youthful and fresh string symphonies are on the program – including the Ninth, which opens a travel diary in tones with a Swiss folk song. Behind the seemingly light surface of his music lies a deeply felt expressiveness.
In contrast, works from the far-reaching Bach family will be presented. Johann Bernhard Bach, a highly gifted, though lesser-known cousin of Johann Sebastian, will be honored with his lively overture in G minor. Additionally, the famous Violin Concerto in A minor (BWV 1041) by Johann Sebastian Bach will be performed, a classic of the baroque concert repertoire that will unfold special brilliance in Höbarth's interpretation.
The musical direction will be taken by Erich Höbarth, one of Austria's outstanding violinists. Known as a concertmaster, chamber musician, and long-time companion of Nikolaus Harnoncourt, he represents an authentic connection between historical performance practice and vibrant musical joy. For the audience, this means: an evening that unites great musical traditions while also being infused with youthful freshness.
